Derek Budd is the coach behind Discover Training, delivering strength and performance coaching from JP’s Gym and Caleb’s Gym in Coatbridge. With over 20 years in the industry, Derek specialises in helping people build real strength through structured training, strong fundamentals, and technical coaching.

Derek’s background is rooted in strength sports and practical strength and conditioning. His coaching focuses on the fundamentals — teaching people how to move well, lift well, and understand the process behind their training so they can continue progressing long term.

He works with a wide range of people. Some arrive completely new to the gym environment and want a clear place to start. Others come with experience and want to refine their technique, improve their programming, or push their strength further. Derek adapts his coaching to the individual, but the principles remain the same: build strong foundations, progress methodically, and make training sustainable.

At the core of Derek’s coaching is a strong technical focus on barbell training and strength development. Squats, presses, deadlifts, and other compound movements form the backbone of his work, supported by intelligent accessory training and conditioning where appropriate. Rather than chasing quick results, Derek prioritises quality movement, consistency, and understanding.

Derek also works with athletes across a range of sports, applying strength and conditioning principles that support performance without unnecessary complexity. His aim is always to help people become more capable and confident in their training.

Alongside one-to-one and small group coaching, Derek runs Guided Strength sessions at Caleb’s Gym. These sessions are designed to help people build confidence with barbells and strength training in a supportive, structured environment.
